Blessed Pope John XXIII and Vatican II on Respect for Human Life
Vivificat! - News, Opinion, Commentary & Reflections from a personal Catholic perspective ^ | 23 October 2008 | Teófilo de Jesús

Folks, the latest moronic display of ignorance about the Catholic Teaching on Life from Senator Joseph Biden was captured on an interview on Delaware-on-Line entitled Biden balances his faith with social responsibility, which has been justly taken apart by my better-known colleagues at Opinionated Catholic, Whispers in the Loggia and Catholics in the Public Square. The clincher is the one-liner Biden used to explain his convoluted pro-abortion posture: To sum it up, as a Catholic, I'm a John XXIII guy, I'm not a Pope John Paul guy.

Well well well. Are we talking about the same Pope who wrote this?

193. We must solemnly proclaim that human life is transmitted by means of the family, and the family is based upon a marriage which is one and indissoluble and, with respect to Christians, raised to the dignity of a sacrament. The transmission of human life is the result of a personal and conscious act, and, as such, is subject to the all-holy, inviolable and immutable laws of God, which no man may ignore or disobey. He is not therefore permitted to use certain ways and means which are allowable in the propagation of plant and animal life.

194. Human life is sacred—all men must recognize that fact. From its very inception it reveals the creating hand of God. Those who violate His laws not only offend the divine majesty and degrade themselves and humanity, they also sap the vitality of the political community of which they are members. (Encyclical Letter Mater et Magistra)

This is the thing about people who justify their wrongful stances by appealing to the Good Pope John and the Second Vatican Council: they ain't got a  clue as to what either the Pope or the Council Fathers thought on abortion:

27. Coming down to practical and particularly urgent consequences, this Council lays stress on reverence for man; everyone must consider his every neighbor without exception as another self, taking into account first of all his life and the means necessary to living it with dignity, so as not to imitate the rich man who had no concern for the poor man Lazarus.

In our times a special obligation binds us to make ourselves the neighbor of every person without exception, and of actively helping him when he comes across our path, whether he be an old person abandoned by all, a foreign laborer unjustly looked down upon, a refugee, a child born of an unlawful union and wrongly suffering for a sin he did not commit, or a hungry person who disturbs our conscience by recalling the voice of the Lord, "As long as you did it for one of these the least of my brethren, you did it for me" (Matt. 25:40).

Furthermore, whatever is opposed to life itself, such as any type of murder, genocide, abortion, euthanasia or willful self-destruction, whatever violates the integrity of the human person, such as mutilation, torments inflicted on body or mind, attempts to coerce the will itself; whatever insults human dignity, such as subhuman living conditions, arbitrary imprisonment, deportation, slavery, prostitution, the selling of women and children; as well as disgraceful working conditions, where men are treated as mere tools for profit, rather than as free and responsible persons; all these things and others of their like are infamies indeed. They poison human society, but they do more harm to those who practice them than those who suffer from the injury. Moreover, they are a supreme dishonor to the Creator. (Second Vatican Council: Pastoral Constitution on the Church in the Modern World, Gaudium et Spes)

Catholics who are stuck in the sixties like Biden and Pelosi should sit down and study what the Church actually taught when Pelosi was busy burning her bra and Biden was busy attending law school. More study should spare them further grief and embarrassment.

On Hannity and Colmes tonite, Geraldine Ferrarro referred to her lunch today with Republican older lady Catholic friends who weren’t for Palin.

In that case, I would assume they’re planning on voting for PRO-ABORTION Obama.

Either that, or they’re not Catholics after all....or perhaps they’re not even Christians to begin with.

And, if so, what was she doing as a good Catholic having lunch with them in the first place.

People don’t seem to understand that the Catholic Church is very much again abortion and is fundamentally and scripturally PRO-LIFE ~

I guess they can just go to confession and have their sin of voting for baby murder forgiven................

whatever.

Anyone who is not Pro-Life is not a Christian.
Religious perhaps, but not a Christian.

These poor souls believed that the Church somehow gave them space to hold their beliefs in the sixties. As we have seen, that’s not true.

Well the 60’s Catholics are now aging and they see younger generations not “tolling” their line.

What amazes me about Sen. Bidden is that he thinks this pro-life stuff goes back to JPII/BXVI.

In fact, the "pro-life stuff" goes all the way back to the birth of Christianity itself. The first-century Didache, which may be considered the oldest known catechism, clearly condemns both infanticide and abortion.

I despise politicians like Biden and Pelosi who pontificate about their Catholicism but don't know diddly-squat about (or conveniently refuse to follow) the Church's teachings.

If Biden & Co. think Vatican II liberalized the Church’s teaching on abortion, think again (if they have the integrity to do so). The Council rightly described abortion as “an abominable crime”.

Now, how clearer can the Church be?

"I guess they can just go to confession and have their sin of voting for baby murder forgiven."

Yes indeed, they can go to confession have their sin of voting for baby murder forgiven. Any and every sin can be forgiven, if there is acknowledgment of guilt, repentance, and a true intention of amendment: avoiding sin and avoiding the "near occasions" of sin.

God is merciful. As Scripture has it, "A broken, contrite heart He will not spurn."

Great quotes. Thanks for this resource!

On a different topic, I always point out the the Latin Mass is the Mass of the Second Vatican Council, and is properly called "The Mass of Blessed John XXIII."

“Now, how clearer can the Church be?”

Bishops could publicly confirm by name that these Catholics who are into baby butchery and proclaim this baby butchery is cool with Church teaching have excommunicated themselves. They could teach by using discipline.

I remember bookmarking an online presentation of the Didache, which after the Scriptures is the oldest well known catechism. I will check again. It does get me angry when there is holy-then-thou politicos that think THEY are right. They will have to answer to God.
